What should an interior painting quote include?

A complete interior painting scope should tell you exactly what is being changed, what preparation is included, what remains outside the work, and what “finished” means.

The answer

Here’s what actually matters.

A complete interior painting scope should tell you exactly what is being changed, what preparation is included, what remains outside the work, and what “finished” means.

What a complete interior painting scope includes

The scope should describe the actual work package, not just the trade name.

  • rooms and exact surfaces being painted
  • patching, sanding, caulking and other preparation
  • primer requirements
  • paint product, sheen, colors and number of coats/coverage standard
  • protection of floors, furniture and fixtures
  • cleanup, touchups and final review

What should be specific before pricing

Quantities, locations, selected products or clear allowances, preparation assumptions and restoration boundaries should be visible enough that two people can understand the same job.

The gaps that cause change orders

  • surface preparation is not equivalent
  • one quote includes ceilings/trim/doors and another is walls only
  • paint products and finish levels differ
  • number of colors and masking/protection are handled differently

Bottom line

If you cannot tell what is included by reading the scope without the salesperson standing beside you, the scope is not clear enough yet.

The next useful question

What affects the cost of interior painting?

Interior painting cost is driven by the amount of work, the condition underneath/around it, material choices, access, and what related work is included—not by one universal unit price.

Touch up the paint or repaint the surface?

Touchups work best when the damaged area is small, the original paint is known and the surrounding paint has not faded or changed sheen. Repaint the whole wall/ceiling when there are many repairs, the old paint has aged, or a spot repair will flash and remain visible.

A closer look

Why can painting quotes be so different?

Two interior painting quotes can be far apart because the contractors may not be pricing the same preparation, materials, access, related work or completion standard—even when the headline description sounds identical.
