Compare your options

How should countertop materials and measurements be compared?

Compare countertop options by the whole installed result, not material name alone. Slab or sheet cost, edge details, cutouts, seams, support, removal, sink compatibility and access can change both the finished appearance and the installation scope.

The answer

Here’s what actually matters.

Compare countertop options by the whole installed result, not material name alone. Slab or sheet cost, edge details, cutouts, seams, support, removal, sink compatibility and access can change both the finished appearance and the installation scope.

Compare the complete installed result

Countertop pricing depends on more than square footage. Layout complexity, corners, seams, cutouts, edge profiles and slab yield affect fabrication. Existing cabinets must be suitable to support the selected top, and sink or appliance dimensions need to be confirmed before fabrication. Ask which measurements are preliminary and when a final template will be taken. Compare the same material grade and inclusions across proposals, and confirm how visible seams, natural variation and repairs to adjacent finishes will be handled.

  • Material and thickness, including product line and finish.
  • Edge profile, seams, backsplash and exposed ends.
  • Sink, faucet, cooktop and other cutouts or openings.
  • Template, delivery, carrying access and installation.
  • Removal, disposal, support changes and finish restoration.

Make the proposal comparable

A material that appears less expensive per unit may not produce a lower installed total if it needs more seams, special support, extra fabrication or difficult access. Review samples under realistic lighting and confirm care requirements before deciding. Avoid ordering until the layout and appliance specifications are stable.

Plan around site conditions

Existing walls, floors, cabinet boxes, access and adjacent finishes can affect the work. Identify visible concerns early and document assumptions. Photos are useful for planning but do not replace field measurements, product specifications or an onsite assessment where needed. Keep any unrelated or regulated work clearly separated from the cabinet or countertop scope.

Confirm the handoff and completion

Before work begins, confirm the approved products, responsibilities, access window, cleanup and process for changes. At completion, compare the visible result with the agreed scope and record unresolved items by location. Retain product information and care instructions where applicable, and do not treat a cosmetic walkthrough as verification of concealed conditions or unrelated systems.

Other questions

Does the countertop price include a sink and faucet?

Not necessarily. Supply, cutouts, mounting, plumbing disconnection or reconnection, and faucet work can be separate items. The proposal should state what is supplied and installed and identify any work requiring a separately qualified provider.

The next useful question

What happens after you send OttoServ a project?

After you send OttoServ a project, the first job is to understand the work—not automatically dispatch somebody. Otto uses your description, photos and project details to identify what is clear, what is missing, whether a licensed trade or site visit is needed, and what the next decision should be.

Project guide

What does a cabinet installation scope include?

A clear cabinet installation scope separates removal, preparation, fitting, hardware, finish adjustments and cleanup. It also identifies what stays in place and which site conditions must be resolved before new cabinets are installed.

Cost & scope

What drives cabinet and countertop installation cost?

Cabinet and countertop costs are shaped by product selection, layout, preparation and installation details. Compare a written scope that identifies supply, removal, fitting, cutouts, trim, access and restoration instead of relying on a single room-level allowance.

Before you commit

Should you keep existing cabinets or replace them?

Keeping existing cabinets can make sense when the boxes are sound, the layout works and the doors or finish are the main concern. Replacement is more compelling when cabinets are damaged, poorly configured or unsuitable for the intended countertop and appliance layout.
