A closer look

Why can two flooring quotes be so different?

Two flooring quotes can be far apart because the contractors may not be pricing the same preparation, materials, access, related work or completion standard—even when the headline description sounds identical.

The answer

Here’s what actually matters.

Two flooring quotes can be far apart because the contractors may not be pricing the same preparation, materials, access, related work or completion standard—even when the headline description sounds identical.

The most common reasons the numbers are different

  • different flooring products or wear layers
  • different waste factors or measured areas
  • subfloor preparation is included in one quote and treated as extra in another
  • baseboards, transitions and door undercuts are handled differently
  • furniture moves, demolition or disposal are not priced the same

A higher price is not automatically better

More money only means more value when the proposal explains what additional work, material, risk or responsibility the price actually buys.

A lower price is not automatically wrong

A contractor may genuinely be more efficient or have better buying power. The problem is a low number that depends on omitted work or unrealistic assumptions.

Bottom line

Normalize the work first. Then compare the price.

The next useful question

LVP vs. laminate: what should you compare?

LVP is vinyl-based and generally handles wet-prone rooms better. Laminate uses a wood-fiber core and can deliver a rigid wood-floor feel and strong wood visuals, but it is usually less forgiving of prolonged water exposure. Exact product ratings matter more than the category name.
