The answer
Here’s what actually matters.
HVAC cost is driven by the amount of work, the condition underneath/around it, material choices, access, and what related work is included—not by one universal unit price.
Florida licensing boundary
Who must handle the regulated work.
Central air-conditioning installation, repair and alteration fall within licensed HVAC/mechanical contracting scopes in Florida. Work outside the HVAC contractor’s lawful scope—such as unrelated general electrical or plumbing work—must be assigned to the appropriately licensed trade.

What actually changes the price
- equipment size/type and efficiency
- duct or airflow corrections
- line-set/drain/electrical work
- controls/zoning
- attic/roof/crane or difficult access
- permit and startup/commissioning requirements
Why a small-looking job can still cost more
Mobilization, difficult access, matching, protection, permits or repairing what is underneath can outweigh the visible size of a small project.
Where low estimates often leave gaps
- equipment may not be equivalent
- one proposal includes duct/airflow correction and another does not
- line set, drain, pad/stand, electrical and thermostat scope differ
- access/crane assumptions differ
- startup, commissioning, permit and warranty-registration responsibilities vary
Bottom line
A useful price is attached to a defined scope. The cheapest number is not cheap if the missing work comes back later as extras.
